When Einstein first published his general theory of relativity, people were still using Newtonian physics. Newtonian physics is based on the idea that objects of the same mass and velocity will fall at the same rate regardless of their distance from each other. Einstein’s relativity theory gave a better description of gravity and time, but it was still based on classical mechanics and didn’t take into account gravity and time as a whole. The only difference was that Einstein had to make some adjustments to his equations to work with gravity and time as a whole. The point here is that we can’t literally see the speed of light, we can only measure it.

As far as we know, light has no physical mass. All we have is a measurement of how fast it moves. In fact, physicists think that light actually has no mass whatsoever - it’s just a wave that travels at the speed of light through space, but that’s not something you can see or touch.
